Residency Information
Residency Statutes
Under NC General Statutes GS 116-143.1(b), to qualify as a resident for tuition purposes, a person must:
- Established legal residency (domicile) in North Carolina, and
- Have maintained that legal residence for at least 12 months prior to being considered for in-state residency.

Residency for Military
An active duty military personnel whose permanent duty station and location is in North Carolina, and their military dependents, are eligible to receive the benefit of in-state tuition even if they are not residents of North Carolina. Residency for NC Teachers
Under North Carolina General Statutes Section (G.S.) 116-143.5 certain North Carolina teachers may be eligible for the in-state tuition rate for courses taken for teacher certification or professional development as a teacher.
