Restrictions

Just like all NC State courses, Distance Education courses occasionally will carry a registration restriction. This restriction may be on all of the seats in the class, or may used to reserve a portion of the seats. To determine how many seats the restriction is on, you will need to look in Pack Tracks. Below is an example of how a course appears in Pack Tracks, the online registration system. You'll notice that this example shows "9 seats restricted available: CLASS=SP" and then lists the non restricted seats available.

DISTANCE EDUCATION COURSE:
The tuition and fee charges for DE courses are separate and distinct from the tuition and fees charged for On-Campus courses.
Please see Distance Education Important Notice for further instructions.

Once you know what the restriction is (in our example above CLASS=SP) you can use the chart below to understand what the restriction means. Additional descriptions of the classification and college codes are available below the chart.

Restriction
Example
Explanation
DAR
DAR Y Department or Instructor approval Required
SCH
SCH 11 Restricted to students in certain colleges
MAJ
MAJ 13 TDZ Restricted to students in certain majors
CLAS
CLAS SP Restricted to certain student classifications
NOPH*

*NOTE: The NOPH restriction is used to indicate courses that are associated with specific Distance Education degree programs. Only students in those degree programs will be able to register for the courses, and the registration is handled by the departments.

CLAS SP Restrictions

Many DE courses are scheduled with a small percentage of seats restricted as "CLAS SP." This restriction provides non-degree students (whose window of registration traditionally opens later than degree students) an opportunity to register for DE courses. The restriction is the only means to provide equitable registration access for these students.
