If you are interested in an undergraduate engineering degree and reside in North Carolina, the 2+2 Engineering Transfer Program may be right for you. The programs are available at the following locations, serving students from the eastern to western-most regions of the state:

Through the 2+2 Engineering Transfer Program, students complete the first two years of pre-engineering courses at the home institution. After meeting NC State College of Engineering transfer admission requirements, students apply to transfer to NC State in the engineering discipline of their choice. Each of the 2+2 programs has an on-site program director employed by NC State who oversees the program, works with students and coordinates with the College of Engineering Division of Academic Affairs.

The following academic programs maybe completed on a  2+2 schedule (two years at a participating institution and two years at NC State):

  • Biological Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Construction Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Industrial & Systems Engineering
  • Materials Science & Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

It is more optimal for students to follow a 1+3 timeline for the following academic programs:

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Nuclear Engineering
  • Paper Science and Engineering
  • Textile Engineering

Policy on Transfer to NC State University College of Engineering

Transfer admission standards vary by engineering degree program according to space available and the number of applicants, but a minimum grade point average of 3.0 is required to ensure consideration for admission. Many departments require a GPA higher than 3.0, thus a 3.5 is the recommended target GPA for 2+2 students.

In order to transfer to the NC State College of Engineering, students must have completed at least 30 transferrable credit hours to include the following courses earning a grade of C or better in each:

  • General Chemistry I with Lab - (4 credit hours)
  • Calculus I and Calculus II - (8 credit hours total)
  • Calculus-based Physics I with Lab - (4 credit hours)
  • English Composition - (4 credit hours which likely equates to two courses)

In addition to the cumulative GPA requirements, the GPA in the last two math courses taken must be at least 2.5. If any NC State courses are taken through Engineering Online, the overall NC State GPA must be at least 2.0.

Cooperative Education

NC State University's College of Engineering has an active co-op program, making it possible for 2+2 students to alternate on-the-job experience with classroom learning and graduate with a co-op certificate after 12 months of work in a structured environment. Students are not eligible for the co-op program until they are admissible to one of NC State University's engineering degree programs.

Good Reasons to Go the Two-Plus-Two (2+2) Route

Approximately halfway through the engineering curriculum, the 2+2 student transfers to the NC State College of Engineering, into their engineering degree program of choice.

NC State is a large university bustling with undergraduate and graduate education as well as research. Campus activities, student engineering societies, career development assistance and interaction with more advanced students provide upper class engineering students with valuable experiences and access to rich opportunities.

The 2+2 student enters this environment as a more mature and advanced student. The presence of laboratories, equipment, research, a large and diverse faculty, and an expansive course offering are more meaningful at this stage of the curriculum.

The only disadvantage one might find in the 2+2 Program is that it requires a transfer and change of location halfway through the curriculum. However, it is typical that many students transfer from the home institution, providing a few friendly faces on NC State's campus.

Career Prospects

Engineers have long been in demand. Job demand continues to grow as the field of engineering expands to encompass an even wider range of engineering disciplines. Using principles of science and mathematics, engineers solve problems, design products and develop solutions. These skills are highly desirable.
