Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science

Description

The graduate certificate in GIS provides professional, graduate-level academic preparation in the development of new technologies that can be used to understand and manage spatial phenomena across a wide spectrum of problems, such as economic development, disease, emergency planning and response, and environmental resources. The program builds on NC State’s strengths in management of technology, computer engineering, and statistical analytics.

(What can I do with this program of study?)

GIS careers exist in every imaginable discipline, from environmental science to mining to urban planning to commercial businesses to defense. Practitioners use GIS to visualize, analyze, and model systems to help in the planning and decision-making processes of their organizations. GIS is a burgeoning field, used across government, commercial, and educational organizations. Jobs range from part-time to full-time posts, and salaries vary widely by region, nation, discipline, and experience.

Curriculum
(What will I learn?)

The Geographic Information Science Graduate Certificate requires 15 credit hours, including:

Core Courses (6 credit hours)

  • GIS/NR 531 Introduction to Geographic Information Science (3)
  • GIS/MEA 592 Geospatial Modeling and Analysis (3)

Elective Courses (9 credit hours). Students select 9 additional credit hours of GIS courses or other courses from a list of approved electives in such fields as business management, engineering, forestry and environmental resources, landscape architecture, public administration, soil science, and statistics.

Award of the certificate requires an overall GPA of at least 3.0. Individual courses may not have grades lower than B-.

Admissions requirements

Admission to the certificate program requires a grade of B- or better in the required introductory course (GIS/NR 531). After successful completion of GIS/NR 531, students should contact Linda Babcock (919-515-3430, l_babcock@ncsu.edu) to request admission. Student must provide a copy of their NC State transcript.

Students must have graduate or PBS (post-baccalaureate studies) status. PBS status is assigned to NDS (non-degree studies) students who have already completed a bachelor's degree.

Students may begin taking courses for the certificate in Summer, Fall or Spring.

The certificate requires 15 credit hours. Students pursuing certificate programs are considered non-degree studies (NDS) students for the purpose of university registration. NDS students may register for a maximum of six credit hours per semester. Thus, the certificate may take from three to five semesters to complete.
