Geographic Information Systems Graduate Certificate

The Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems provides NC State graduate students and non-degree graduate level students the opportunity to develop recognized academic credentials and advanced expertise in Geographic Information Sciences.

Academic Requirements

A minimum of 15 credit hours of required and elective courses as listed below.

Required (10 credits)
One of the following four introductory courses (3 credits)*
NR 531 Introduction to Geographic Information Science (3 credits)
PA 541 GIS for Public Administration (3 credits)
SSC 440 GIS in Production Agriculture (3 credits)
ECI 630/496E Special Topics in Education: GIS in Education (3 credits)
*Any of these courses may be taken as an elective if not taken as the required introductory course.

Plus:
FOR 510 Introduction to GPS (1 credit)
NR 532 Principles of Geographic Information Science (3 credits)
NR 533 Application Issues In GIS (3 credits)

Electives (5 credits)
BAE/SSC 435/535 Precision Agriculture Technology (3 credits)
CE 538 Information Technology and Modeling (3 credits)
COM 598Y Mapping Communication: Visualization and Spatial Analysis of Social
and Technological Networks (3 credits)
FOR 554 Principles of Spatial Analysis (3 credits)
FOR 753 Environmental Remote Sensing (3 credits)
LAR 500 Landscape Design Studio (GIS section – 6 credits)
NR 535 Computer Cartography (2 credits)
NR 536 (proposed) Introduction to Visual Basic for GIS (3 credits)
SSC 590M Remote Sensing Applications in Soil Science & Agriculture (3 credits)
ST 733 Applied Spatial Statistics (3 credits)

Award of a certificate requires a GPA of 3.0 or better for the certificate courses (required and elective) and a grade of B- or better in all of the certificate courses. The GISc Faculty Coordinator will be responsible for certifying the GPA and course grades of certificate candidates.

Admissions
Admission to the certificate program requires a grade of B- or better in the required introductory course (see above) and NR 532 AND a GPA of 3.0 or better in both courses. After completing these required courses, contact Linda Babcock to request admission to the certificate program. You will need to provide a copy of your NCSU transcript.
