Programs
Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Mechatronics (joint program)
Description
For students in western North Carolina, a bachelor of science in engineering (BSE) degree in mechatronics is offered jointly by NC State and UNC-Asheville. Known as the Joint Mechatronics Engineering (JEM) curriculum, it combines on-campus and online study. Students may begin the program at Lenoir Community College, Craven Community College or UNC-Wilmington, as well as at UNC-Asheville or NC State. The program is administered by UNC-Asheville. Students who complete the program receive a diploma that reflects both UNC-Asheville and NC State University as granting institutions.

Career prospects
(What can I do with this program of study?)
Mechatronics engineering is a concentration of mechanical, electrical and computer engineering. Mechatronics engineering focuses on the precision control of mechanical and machine systems.
Curriculum
(What will I learn?)
The curriculum combines the best that two nationally recognized universities have to offer. From NC State University comes the engineering component comprising course work in mechanical and aerospace engineering, electrical and computer engineering, and mechatronics. Hands-on laboratories are integral to the engineering course work. From UNC-Asheville comes an engineering-themed humanities and social sciences component with a rich liberal arts foundation. Some of the NC State course work is taught by NC State faculty residing on the UNC Asheville campus, while other NC State course work is delivered to UNC-Asheville via live distance education technology.
Plan of study
(How much time will it take?)
The first two years of engineering requirements are fulfilled with a combination of on-campus and online courses. After engineering matriculation requirements are met, students transfer to the degree program at UNC-Asheville.
