Common Misconceptions about DE Courses
DE = Easier
No! DE courses are at least as rigorous as on-campus courses, and DE formats often require more writing and reading than traditional formats.
DE = On Your Own
No! Many DE courses require student participation in online discussions and other group activities. Instructors, advisors and administrators are there to assist DE students.
DE = Self-Paced
No! Most DE courses have a schedule of assignments and assessments similar to those in on-campus courses. Students must log into online courses regularly.
10 Tips for Success in Distance Education Courses
- Make sure your technology is working before the class starts. Don’t try to learn the technology and the course content at the same time.
- Make sure that you are set up to receive email or other communications from your instructor.
- Read the course syllabus and course website carefully and follow instructions.
- Obtain all required DVDs, textbooks and coursepacks before the course begins.
- For online courses, log into your course as soon as it begins. During the semester, log in regularly, at least 3-4 times per week.
- Explore and utilize all course resources provided, including supplementary resources.
- Participate actively in course discussions, including online discussions.
- Don’t procrastinate. Stay on schedule with your assignments.
- Behave with academic integrity and observe the student code of conduct.
- Ask for help when you need it.
